It will either run exactly the same or not noticeably slower. Most of the differences between versions are in features and bug fixes. There is very rarely a performance update. If you go to the Netbook version of Ubuntu you may see a performance boost as it was designed with performance in mind (limiting some of the extra effects that comes with regular Ubuntu).

That being said if you switched to Xubuntu you will notice a huge performance boost as XFCE is a lot lighter then Gnome and works great on older hardware (like your computer). Give it a try ( ).

In theory Ubuntu 9.10 should run faster as it uses the ext4 filesystem as default along with GRUB 2

You may need to consider some extra RAM making it up to 512mb as what you have at the moment is rather low

Recommended system requirements are

700 MHz x86 processor
384 MB of system memory (RAM)
8 GB of disk space
Graphics card capable of 1024x768 resolution

Usually, the upgrades offer more pre-built software and Desktop enhancements. I run 8.10 and have not upgraded because I find just about all the software I need in the Repositories. 8.10 improved my nVidia graphics card, but otherwise I have turned off Desktop effects and I would say 8.10 runs about the same as 7.10 did.

There were some issues with 8.04 and my nVidia card. So, I'm glad I upgraded. Usually, I partion about 20gig and try an upgrade. If I find myself booting into that partition all the time, that upgrade becomes my working Ubuntu. I installed 9.10 on a PIII, but he had more RAM. 9.10 has issues with the Parallel port, and he had an old HP all-in-one scanner/fax/printer. The solution is in a terminal, I have to command-line the serial port ==> sudo modprobe parport_pc and that's good for the rest of the day until shut-down. My friend remarked how much faster his computer was than under Win98, which was good. He didn't have the install discs anymore for Win.

So, RAM and the parallel port could be an issue, but otherwise should be okay.

I believe that it will be slower. A lot of eye candy has been added since the 8.04 release. I would suggest upgrading to Xubuntu, which is more lightweight.

Ubuntu upgrades are pretty lightweight so you should not see a difference, but chances are it will be slower.
