How do I install Linux Suse 9.2 on my laptop when it cannot find the harddrive?

Nick W asked:

I am currently using a SAMSUNG HM250JI 250gb harddrive and it does not find it. I have made the partition and have everything ready to go or so I thought.

any reason you are using such an old version of suse?

Unless you have a specific reason you’re really not doing yourself any favours by trying to use an out-of-date build.

This may well be the solution to the problem…

Generally when I come across a problem like that I go to the /dev directory and look for the hd* or sd* (on newer distros) devices. Those are your hard drive partitions. On an X-based install I would do that by pressing Ctl-Alt-F2 and logging in as root, then doing an ls /dev. If I see the drive there I reboot and look at the command line options carefully. If I don’t I give up and try another distro. To go with what the above poster said, I have two old Pentium MMX laptops (No I haven’t had them since Atlantis sank). One has Slackware 10.1 on it, the other gentoo, which of course is always current. Whatever problems I might have, I have always found surfing the web, for example, with a really outdated distro is worse. For that reason, unless you REALLY have a good reason to install Suse 9.2, I’d give up now and try something else.

Try installing SUSE 10.3 instead or consider Linux Mint 5.0
